Christian Community
An integral aspect of our mission at AKUA Family Therapy is to challenge and dispel the misconception that Christians should not seek therapy.
We aim to foster a supportive environment that encourages individuals from all faith backgrounds, including Christians, to embrace therapy as a valuable resource for personal growth, healing, and strengthening relationships. By promoting a positive perception of therapy within the Christian community, we strive to reduce barriers and ensure everyone feels welcomed and supported in their journey towards improved mental health and wellbeing.
Many Christians still believe that "only" Jesus can help us with our problems. We hear pastors, evangelists and church leaders all the time preach about and condemn going to therapy. They say things like, "I went to therapy for years, and they didn't help me. I only found freedom when I came to Jesus." They make it sound like going to therapy isn't helpful, but it might just be that they were going to a therapist or counselor that did not identify with their world view or just wasn't a good fit.
At Akua Family Therapy, we have therapists who identify as Christian. It is often reassuring to know that your therapist can identify with your worldview and religious beliefs. While we connect well with persons of Christian faith and background, we do not discriminate against persons of other worldview, religious faith or other backgrounds. We do not provide "Christian Counseling", that is something that your local pastor can do for you. There are also other Christian faith based resources in our community that may be of value to you. We provide clinical mental health and relationship counseling services.
We believe that we are called to serve the whole community. This includes people from all walks of life. We believe that therapy and counseling serves our community. We believe that our therapeutic services are answering the call that Jesus gave us to love and serve one another. Matthew 20:28
We believe that God has gifted his church with gifts and talents that help to equip, empower, build up, unify, heal, strengthen, grow, make mature, and fulfill purpose to the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-16.
We believe we are called to use our gifts (therapy) to serve our community. 1 Peter 4:10
We believe that serving our community (therapy) brings glory to God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
Most of our clients do not identify as Christian. This comforts us in knowing that all people find safety with us and see us as a reliable source of therapeutic healing, resource and support. If you are a Christian and are looking for a therapist or counselor that does not discriminate to your worldview, we hope that you will give us a call.
